Couldn't agree more. When I chaired Ents many years ago and Umbrella was
seemingly stuck irretrievably in the Manchcester mud. I was very keen that
it should move round the country. This was mostly for democratic reasons
(although I was heartily sick of UMIST) because the figures showed clearly
that the nearer you live to the venue the more likely you were to visit. It
seemed to me that the staff were extremely reluctant to disturb an
smoothly-running machine - that there were not many suitable alternative
venues at the price, I was told. There was certainly no enthusiasm at all
to go looking.
With any membership organisation there is always a difficult balance to be
struck between on the one hand benefiting from staff expertise and advice,
and on the other acquiescing in a too-cosy atmosphere and an organisation
which is run for the convenience of staff. I felt very strongly that
Umbrella organisation was too close to the latter and before I left Ents the
Board passed a motion directing the staff to find an alternative venue -
which did happen, eventually.
It's up to the new generation to make sure that Umbrella doesn't snuggle
down again in Hatfield. CILIP's roots are weak enough without wasting the
outreach opportunities provided by Umbrella.

I'm going along, but I'm VERY disappointed that the venue is the same as
last time.
Cheers
