Depends! What's the user requirement?
If I'm searching Flickr for images of London, Canada (using 'london canada' as my search term) then I don't appear to *need* coordinates. It is possible that if I could click on a map and say, "show me everything that was taken with 5km of this point" then I'd get better results - but it is also possible that I wouldn't or that the costs of enabling that kind of functionality would outweigh the benefits?
Interesting that in the Microblogging Nanoformats world (http://microformats.org/wiki/twitter-nanoformats) one still sees significantly more use of L:placename than L:coordinate (despite the fact that one might have expected that many mobile devices could supply the coordinates at little or no cost to the user).
