Hi
If the student has been 'statemented' at school then there must be a huge
file somewhere that contains a record of his SSEN history, reviews etc. If
he's come straight from college maybe his local authority still have a copy
of this. If he's an adult who's been out of education for a while, it might
worth asking him if his parents or local authority still have a copy.
You'll need to trawl through this documentation for clues that might help
you advise the student whether he needs to update this evidence and, if so,
who he needs to meet.
If the student has only provided vague evidence that describes 'specific
learning difficulties, not dyslexia' but recalls being statemented at
school, maybe he's reluctant to reveal full information about his diagnosis
for some reason. Is it worth interviewing the student to explore his
education history and to look for indicators of conditions that might also
cause specific learning difficulties - such as autistic spectrum disorders,
acquired or congenital brain injury , chronic mental health difficulties
etc?
If you are going to refer the student for an assessment, I'd make sure he
meets a chartered educational psychologist who has experience of working
with adults with a range of conditions that might cause specific learning
difficulties, including Aspergers.

Ian Francis

Subject: Assessment for specific leaning difficulty
Dear All,
I have a student who had a statement whilst at school as he has a specific
learning difficulty, not dyslexia. He has provided me with a one page
document with no heading and no name, signature or contact details.
He wants to apply for DSA so will need further evidence. Our dyslexia tutor
has asked me to find out what other institutions do in these cases. Would
you normally just send these through your EPs etc, assuming of course that
you have briefed them and that they are happy to see them?
