Yes, I knew Martha from NSCAD (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design),
where I was a regular visitor, thanks to David Askevold; Martha was at
Dalhousie, and her boyfriend at the time was at NSCAD which is how I met
her. There's been a resurgence of this whole period, which I trace
somewhat to Nova Scotia roots - Peggy Gale put out a book of a number of
talks given at the school a few years ago. That environment was free-
wheeling, particularly David's Projects class/arena. Ian Murray (Ian Ah on
Second Life) could tell you a lot about that. I'm not sure about "work of
conceptual art by MW" - at the time it felt that we were all equals, and
the space resonated with places like 112 Greene Street and later 55
Mercer - even the early women's cooperative A.I.R. It was difficult to
know (and it didn't matter really) what was art, what was architecture (I
think of Gordon Matta-Clark) and what was space/place. Martha was semial
in all of this, as was 112 Greene and for that matter the early Kitchen.
There was also Printed Matter of course which she started w/ Jackie Apple
if I remember correctly, and at that time PM was a godsend because
publications were _cheap_ and other artists could afford them. Now things
have gone the other way - I can hardly afford any of the books, works, or
texts that are crucial to me. But this is par with the structural changes
in the artworld - which have to do with people like Mary Boone (my ex-
student) among other people, the rise of the gallerists etc. Thank god for
the lower east side scene - it's a shame it didn't last longer and of
course AIDS decimated everyone around the same time.
Would love to see and review the book when it's done!
And thanks, Alan
