medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Those letters and letter fragments are only relatively new. Dieter Schaller discovered them at Troyes in the 1960s. They were edited for the first time in 1974, by Schaller's student Ewald Könsgen (_Epistolae Duorum Amantium: Briefe Abaelards und Heloises?_ [Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1974; Mittellateinische Studien und Texte, Bd. 8]). Mews reprinted Könsgen's text and added a highly regarded English-language translation. Apart from the virtues of that translation, this by itself was no real advance over Graziella Ballanti's reprinting of Könsgen's text in her Italian-language translation: Anonimi, _Un epistolario d'amore del XII secolo (Abelardo e Eloisa?)_ (Roma: Anicia, 1988). What's really important about Mews' book (again, apart from the translation) is its argument.

John Dillon
