Literatur zwischen Unterhaltung und Didaktik.

Das Thema: Als anthropologische Konstante stellt das Vergnügen an
Erzählungen ein willkommenes Instrument des Menschen dar, die Monotonie und
die Langeweile des Alltags zu durchbrechen. Jene Schichten der Gesellschaft,
die –aus einem jeweils zu bestimmenden Impetus heraus– um die geistige
Wohlfahrt der Allgemeinheit besorgt sind, wussten die Breitenwirksamkeit des
Mediums Literatur stets für eigene Ziele zu nutzen, indem sie das
Unterhaltsame ihren pädagogischen Impulsen unterzuordnen versuchten. Knigges
daran anschließender Hinweis „Man soll nie vergessen, daß die Gesellschaft
lieber unterhalten als unterrichtet sein will“ verweist auf eine Dichotomie,
die besonders die deutschsprachige Geistesgeschichte geprägt hat.

Sei es das ‚Vorspiel auf dem Theater’ (Goethe, Faust), sei es die
literaturwissenschaftliche Diskussion rund um das Dreischichtenmodell  nach
H.-J. Foltin (Dichtung/Hochliteratur – Unterhaltungsliteratur –
Trivialliteratur), oder sei es die unlängst ins Leben gerufene Debatte um
den Bildungsauftrag öffentlich-rechtlicher Sender, das Verhältnis zwischen
didaktischem Anspruch des Autors und den Bedürfnissen des Publikums scheint
kaum ohne diese Polarität denkbar. 

Die Fragestellungen: Wie hat sich das Verhältnis von Unterhaltung und
Didaktik im Fall von literarischen Kunstwerken im Lauf der Jahrhunderte
gewandelt? Welche Rolle spielt hier die Erscheinung des sinnlich
stimulierenderen Mediums Film? Welche Versuche, beide Ansprüche zu
vereinigen, haben sich bewährt und welche versagt? Bieten gegenwärtige Leit-
und Subkulturen neue Impulse in dieser Richtung?

Vorträge (max. 25 Minuten) zu allen Epochen und Genres aus dem Feld der
Deutschen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte, ebenso der Film- und
Medienwissenschaft sind willkommen. Eine Kurzbeschreibung des Vortrages
(max. 250 Wörter) ist als Bewerbung bitte unter Angabe des Titels an die
Veranstalter des Oxforder German Graduate Seminars zu verschicken:

Literature between entertainment and instruction.

The theme: It has long been known that taking pleasure in stories is a way
for human beings to break up the monotony and tedium of everyday life. Those
sections of society concerned – due to a variety of motivations – with
promoting the intellectual well-being of the public, have long been able to
utilise the broad appeal of the medium literature for their own ends by
subordinating the entertaining aspect to their own pedagogical agenda. In
respect of this, Knigge’s comment that “One should never forget that society
would rather be amused than instructed” highlights a dichotomy that has
shaped the intellectual history of German-speaking areas in particular.

Whether we consider the ‘Vorspiel auf dem Theater’ (Prelude on the Stage;
Goethe’s Faust), the discussion in literary criticism concerning the
Dreischichtenmodell (the division of literature into three levels: high
literature—popular fiction—light (‘trashy’) fiction; Foltin, 1965), or the
recent debate surrounding the educational function of publicly-funded
broadcasting, the relationship between didactic pretensions and public
appeal in presenting fiction genres seems unthinkable without this polarity. 

The problem: How has the relationship between entertainment and didacticism
in fiction literature changed throughout the course of history? Primarily a
stimulus of the senses, what role has the emerging medium of film had to
play? What attempts to combine these two elements have succeeded in the long
term, if any, and which have failed? Do current mainstream and sub-cultures
provide new impetus for this?

A brief abstract (max. 250 words) and title for papers of no more than 25
minutes addressing these questions or related issues in German literature
and culture should be submitted to the co-convenors of the Oxford Modern
German Graduate Seminar at [log in to unmask] by 20
February 2009. Contributions from the fields of media and film studies or
similar will also be considered.
