ASA Special Workshop: Cross Language Speech Perception

This ASA Special Workshop on Speech revolves around the fundamental question of how experience with language systematically shapes perception of even the most basic building blocks of spoken communication - consonants and vowels. The topics will cover current theoretical perspectives and recent research on cross-language speech perception. Specific topics include basic issues and findings, neuropsychological undrepinnings, and language-training applications related to language-tuned speech perception.
The workshop will be held at the end of the ASA's spring meeting in Portland, May 18-22, 2009. It is being sponsored by the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and co-sponsored by the universities and research labs of the organizing committee members, listed below.
With the theme "Cross-language speech perception and variations in linguistic experience"
the workshop has lined up an exciting slate of invited speakers, including a keynote address by Winifred Strange, with a closing address by James J. Jenkins. In addition, we have scheduled two contributed talk sessions and two contributed poster sessions to permit a wide range of submitted presentations. We especially encourage graduate students to participate and present, and are offering six student travel awards to support that goal.

The Department of Linguistics at Tuebingen University offers two junior positions (phonology/phonetics and semantics) with the beginning of summer semester 2009.
For both positions duties include teaching at the undergraduate and the graduate level. The teaching load is four hours per week, i.e. two courses per semester. Furthermore, the candidates are expected to conduct original research in their area of expertise, and to actively participate in larger linguistic research endeavours at Tuebingen University.
Candidates should hold a PhD at the time of the appointment.
The appointments should start as soon as possibe after April 1, 2009, and not later than October 1, 2009. Interviews will be conducted until the positions are filled. 1. Phonology/Phonetics
The successful candidate will be an expert in phonology and phonetics, with a strong background in experimental methods. A secondary specialization in psycholinguistics, morphology or pragmatics will be considered a plus.
Salary will be on the German E13 scale ('Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter').
The appointment will be for four years.
2. Semantics:
The successful candidate will be an expert in formal semantics. A secondary specialization in another area of linguistics, especially in pragmatics, psycholinguistis or syntax will be considered a plus.
Depending on the position in the career, the salary will be on the German
A13 ('Akademischer Rat auf Zeit') or E13 ('Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter') scale. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal for another three years.

The University of Zurich invites applications for an Assistant Professorship in Phonetics and Phonology to be filled at the earliest date possible.
Applicants should have demonstrated competence in both teaching and research. The professorship is located in the phonetic laboratory/phonogram archive. It is desirable that applicants have experience in empirical research in the area of linguistic phonetics, also on the official languages of Switzerland. Interdisciplinary cooperation with the other linguistic departments is expected, both in research and teaching.
The post is limited to a maximum of six years (three years plus extension).
A Habilitationsschrift or substantial publications beyond the doctoral thesis are prerequisites. The University of Zurich wishes to increase the number of women in teaching and research. Therefore, applications from women are particularly welcome.

PhD scholarship in the field of spoken-language comprehension
The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen offers a 3-year scholarship for research leading towards a PhD in the field of spoken-language comprehension.
The successful candidate will develop a dissertation project within the ongoing research themes of the Adaptive Listening Group. The Adaptive Listening Group is a newly established independent research group under the direction of Dr. Andrea Weber and investigates the processing of foreign-accented speech. The institute's website provides more information about the group. With respect to the research project, a topic concerning the processing of variation in speech or experiential influences on perception is currently of most interest to the group, but other topics that fall in the scope of the group are possible as well. The research will concern language perception by adults, but may involve a variety of methodological approaches, including cross-linguistic comparisons, the use of eyetracking and neuroimaging techniques, or computational modeling.
Candidates with a background in experimental psycholinguistics or experimental phonetics may receive preference. Good command of English is required.

The UCL Centre for Human Communication is pleased to announce that it has been awarded two quota ESRC studentships for the academic year commencing September
2009 and is additionally able to nominate applications for an ESRC open competition studentship.
ESRC studentships provide up to four years full funding for postgraduate training. They cover tuition fees and include a maintenance grant.
The CHC will consider applicants for 1+3 quota and open studentships for the MRes in Speech, Language and Cognition followed by PhD research within the CHC group. We will also consider applicants who have completed relevant Masters-level training for a 3 year PhD studentship within the CHC. The CHC is a virtual centre that exists to foster interaction amongst UCL staff who are involved in research on human language and communication. Research includes, but is not limited to, acquisition, the neurobiology of communication, pathology, perception, production, rehabilitation, pragmatics, technology innovations, theory construction and modelling.
