The Endangered Archives Programme at the British Library is pleased to let
members of the list know about the latest catalogue to be added to our
WebPages. This catalogue is for the Project: “Ritual Narratives of Bagr Secret
Society: Audio, Video and Digital Preservation of Ancient Myths from the
Dagara of Northern Ghana”.
The Bagr cult was the single most significant foundational institution of the
Dagara people of Northern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso and, in the past,
was well preserved in memory through yearly performances of rites of
initiation. This practice has, over the years, created an intangible verbal
monument of enormous size. The material from this project comprises audio
recordings, audio-visual material and images documenting the structured
narratives recited within the Dagara Bagr ritual context.
