A British Sociological Association Youth Study Group Seminar
12th June 2009, University of Southampton
‘New methodological challenges for youth research’
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
This one day event aims to explore some of the new methodological challenges facing youth researchers. The BSA Youth Study Group last focused specifically on methodological issues at its conference in 2000 on ‘Researching Youth: Controversies, Issues and Dilemmas’, which subsequently formed the basis for the book ‘Researching Youth’, edited by former Study Group convenors Andy Bennett, Mark Ceislik and Steven Miles. Since then, there have been some exciting methodological developments amongst the UK social science community, not least those made possible by advances in new technologies. Whilst tried and tested methods such as interviews, focus groups, observation and surveys remain widely used by youth researchers, there is also a much greater willingness to draw on a more diverse repertoire of methods for generating data.
This seminar seeks to explore these new methodological challenges and we are keen to attract papers from researchers at all career stages who are currently developing innovative strategies for research. Possible topics might include:
• ‘mobile methods’, such as research walkabouts and other forms of research ‘on the move’;
• internet-based methods, especially those which exploit the potential of the internet for accessing new kinds of data and social contexts, eg online ethnography and both quantitative and qualitative analysis of the content of social networking sites, blogs and other web sites;
• visual approaches, such as the use of photography, film, art, visual artefacts, and spatial mapping techniques;
• participatory and peer-led approaches to youth research;
• narrative and biographical approaches;
• qualitative longitudinal approaches and the re-use of existing qualitative data;
• comparative methods for qualitative and quantitative cross-cultural/cross-national youth research
• ethical issues arising from innovative methodologies
Abstracts (max 300 words) on these or other related topics should be submitted to Sue Heath ([log in to unmask]) by 20th March 2009 at the very latest.
The event will also mark the publication by Sage of a new methods book, ‘Researching Young People’s Lives’, by Sue Heath (University of Southampton; former Youth Study Group convenor), Rachel Brooks (University of Surrey; current Youth Study Group convenor), Liz Cleaver (University of Birmingham) and Eleanor Ireland (NatCen).
Any further enquiries about the event should be directed to Sue Heath, Professor of Sociology, University of Southampton, 02380-592578, [log in to unmask]
