I think it's just doing the linking in this case, but why g77 not gcc
here I don't know (haven't looked in the makefiles or anything).
I did set FC=g77 and F77=g77 at configure time (also at make time) to
avoid using gfortran, which seems to have worked fine for all
packages prior to SMURF. Wouldn't have thought that would force use of
g77 in preference to gcc though.
However, if I replace "g77" with "gcc" or "gcc -std=c99" I still see
much the same.
