The specification in question is the UKCS (United Kingdom Core Specification). It is available for a one-off fee which licences individual organisations to use it. The fee varies according to the type of library: £500 for public and university libraries; £250 for college and special libraries. VAT is not charged. Further information and sample pages are available on the Cilip website (easiest to search under UKCS as it is rather buried!), or you can e-mail me direct [log in to unmask]

Actually, the cost of a licence to use the UK Core Spec depends on the size/type of the library. For your institution, I suspect it would be a lot less - £250.
Not only would it save you lots of time bin drawing up a spec - because the majority of LMS suppliers are familiar with its structure, you'd be more likely to get consistent and well-laid-out responses to any ITT you might derive from it.

Gillian,
Hi - you've probably been given this information by now, but there's a very useful document called something like 'UK Core specification' for library systems produced by a consultant in the UK. Catch is that it costs about £500 - the benefit is that it does loads of work for you and could save you a lot of time - you'll have to weight it up...

Apologies for cross postings
Does anyone have any experience they can share regarding the production of a specification for a new/revised
Library management system? Any help and advice would be great fully received - thanks in advance.
Kind Regards/Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Gillian
