Overview:
This interactive workshop will focus on how publishers can exploit the
secondary rights potential in their publications internationally, in both
print and online, as well as in both English and foreign languages.
Programme:
* Purposes of licensing rights internationally - overview of the role
that rights would play within a publishing organization. Complementary to
primary sales activities
* Overview of the different kinds of rights that you could license:
translations, online, e-books etc before talking about the different
business models
* Manner of licensing - direct with 3rd party publisher, via
distributors, aggregators ebook provider and/or via RRO's
* Business models which exist for such licensing content including
types of payment structures - including royalty and flat fee
* Factors to consider when deciding on your international/country
strategy: importance of the geographical area and market type to your
overall sales strategy. Would direct sales work better than licensing?
* Considerations for choosing third party publishers
* Specific issues surrounding the media in which the rights are being
granted in - i.e. print & web
* Specific translation issues - quality and copyright
* Considerations re branding, sponsorship
* Dealing with 3rd party material within your publication and onward
licensing: images, photos, artwork. Sub-licensing rights
* Protecting intellectual property rights
* Getting the contract in place - key clauses
* Practical issues regarding processes and sending and reviewing
content
* Management and follow up, review of the arrangements & cost
implications
* Collecting funds due
* Auditing and further quality control
Who should attend:
This course is suitable for those working in publishing units of all sizes
who intend to or currently have some experience in licensing rights
internationally. For more experienced delegates this should provide a useful
refresher and will address newer media rights and practical and legal
issues.
