Volume description:
This volume in the European Crime Fictions series will act as an introduction to
crime writing in German. It will present the development of crime fiction in
German, Swiss and Austrian cultures from the early-nineteenth century to the
present day and explore the distinctive features of a German-language
tradition. This discussion will be grounded in the study of novels by selected
German-speaking writers, some of whom have an established international
reputation, such as Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Bernhard Schlink, whilst others
may be relatively unknown, such as Petra Hammesfahr. Each chapter will
examine a specific period, movement or group of writers, as well as engaging
with broader debates about the contribution crime fiction makes more
generally to contemporary German and European culture.
The volume will be written in English in an accessible style and is aimed at
under¬graduate readers who may have had little prior exposure to the study
of popular culture and/or to crime fiction in German as a body of writing. It will
be divided into 6 chapters of 6000 words, plus an extended introduction. Each
chapter will end with a short extract, in English translation, from a key text
under discussion. These extracts are intended to encourage the reader to
explore the primary material further, particularly those who may not be fluent
in German. The volume will end with an extensive annotated bibliography
directing readers to secondary material available in German and English.
