Hi,
Looks like Kubuntu ought to be compatible although I've no personal
experience with that specific hardware.
Did you use the debian package to install FSL? That should have resolved
all required library deps with suitable native packages. VTK is the core
of the 3D mode. Have you got a repository provided version of VTK installed?
The output of "ldd `which fslview_bin`" might help here.

Sounds like a VTK/driver mismatch. You might try a source build of VTK
(not for the faint hearted) at this point. Maybe apt-get can do this for
you? (I don't have a lot of experience with debian so I don't know the
correct spell for this.)
