I agree that this film is fascinating to study as a material/text, but
I find it hard to see any of its merits perhaps because I feel
politically quite distant to it. I wonder how this ending would
compare to that of Dogville? There, Lars von Trier makes a very
conscious and provocative choice of placing photographs of 30s America
against a fictional story that takes place on a soundstage. Here, the
situation is somewhat reversed; any reality in this story is called to
be forgotten by the ending: the frozen kiss, the answer to the
question of Jamal's success and the dance. Danny Boyle may not be
aware of it, but it is a very provocative and disturbing choice.
