Dear Elaine
Here at Birmingham we have taken the targets for submission to EThOS as
not being mandatory but an ideal! We, like many other HEIs want the
service to work and so we have put the following process in place.
We are quickly glancing through each requested thesis (like you they are
now coming thick and fast which is great news for EThOS) and sending
them in where there are no obvious areas of concern. We are then
contacting the author (either just before sending or after sending)
about permissions. I can send you our sample letter if you would like.
Where an individual thesis provides more cause for concern then we may
decline to send until such time as we have approached and received back
from the author to identify what permissions have been put in place. It
is all done on a case by case basis but we are tending to err on the
side of sending it off for digitisation. Although this may be a risk we
are confident of the measures in place (such as the rapid take down
policy) to ensure that Birmingham theses are out in EThOS and all the
knock on benefits of Open Access which will ensue.
Hope that helps but happy to discuss with you if you would like.
Regards

Subject: Ethos procedures and 3rd party copyright
Hi everyone
Can I ask how people are dealing with checking theses for third party
copyright
material given that the deadline for sending to the BL is one week? As
Copyright Officer, I am looking in horror at the huge increase in
workload!
Many thanks
Elaine
