Dear ASA members
Happy New Year. Following the successful ASA (and ASAANZ and AAS)
conference in Auckland in December, preparations are well underway for
2009 ASA conference, in Bristol.
**ASA09 call for papers
Please note that the call for papers for the upcoming conference is
open - and closes on the 6th February. So please take a look at
www.theasa.org/asa09
and propose a paper.
**ASA09 call for films
We have now opened a call for films for the separate, parallel film
programme. Visual anthropologists thus have a second avenue through
which to include their work. Go towww.theasa.org/asa09 and propose
your film.
**ASA FILM COMPETITION - closing date extended by a week
The ASA is hosting a bi-annual competition for new film entries
completed after February 1st 2007. The deadline for the first ASAFilm
competition is now February 6th 2009. First prize will be 100 pounds;
there will be two runner-up awards of 50 pounds; and if the winner has
a full-length film it will be shown at the next ASA conference. There
will also be a screening session of the winning short films at the
next RAI festival in 2009.
See www.theasa.org/film

**CONFERENCE
Seeking Refuge: caught between bureaucracy, lawyers and public
indifference?
SOAS, London
16th and 17th April 2009
What is the situation confronting 'refugees' and immigrants who enter
Europe and North America? While this issue has received considerable
attention in the press there has been too little in-depth research
examining the issues that confront those who seek asylum. This
conference seeks to remedy that gap by bringing together innovative
new research by anthropologists, sociologists, lawyers, historians,
social scientists, asylum/immigrant advocates and human rights
activists in the form of cutting-edge case studies of the political
institutions, bureaucratic obstacles, legal issues and socio-political
process that asylum seekers confront.
Registration is now open: see http://www.nomadit.co.uk/refuge/

** STUDENTSHIPS: BRITISH INTER-UNIVERSITY CHINA CENTRE
From the start of the 2009-10 academic year, two two-year
postgraduate studentships for Masters students in Chinese Studies will
be available through the British Inter-University China Centre (BICC).
They will be available to students on a suitable Masters course in
Oxford. The course must contain a Chinese language component. The
studentships will pay full Home/EU fees and maintenance for the
duration of the studentship (fees only for EU students unless they
meet residency requirements as laid down in the ESRC’s guidelines).
Funded through the Language-Based Area Studies initiative, BICC is a
cross-institutional research and teaching centre, which joins together
the expertise of the Universities of Oxford, Bristol and Manchester in
Chinese studies. These studentships are open to Home/EU students only
(and eligibility for the awards follows research council residency
rules). Both students who already have an offer of a place in hand or
who still intend to apply for admission in 2009 will be eligible for
funding.
Students will be expected, by the end of their first year of study, to
have reached the level of Chinese language proficiency laid down in
BICC’s language conventions. These can be found on the student pages
of the BICC website, www.bicc.ac.uk

** MEDIA INQUIRY
I work in the factual department of TigerAspect, developing new
projects for primetime television. In this capacity I have been
fascinated to discover anecdotal reports of people, groups,
subcultures and communties who are on the outskirts of society (from
survivalist groups, cults, secret societies or merely 'alternative'
lifestyle followers) - I wanted to hopefully get in touch with a socio-
cultural anthropologist or even an urban anthropologist to explore
this theme in a more focused and robust way and try to discover if
such alternative communities can form and exist in western countries -
or are really only possible in more remote environments where they can
be 'left alone'.
Best wishes
John
