Statistical Genetics PhD opportunities in the
MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics
School of Medicine, Cardiff University
The MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics offers three year and four year PhD opportunities from Oct 2009 to investigate:
· Major psychiatric disorders: schizophrenia, bipolar and unipolar depression;
· Neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease and other dementias;
· Developmental Disorders: dyslexia, ADHD, childhood depression, pre-natal environmental influences on behaviour.
Three year projects to study these diseases are offered in the areas of bioinformatics and biostatistics, genetics, genomics, molecular and cell biology, behavioural neuroscience, psychology and imaging.
Projects include:
· Identification and analysis of disease pathways in genome-wide association studies
· Novel methods for analysing disease phenotypes in genome-wide association studies
· Identifying genotype-phenotype relationships in genome-wide association studies
Four year MRC projects are also available with a first year training in neuropsychiatric genetics and genomics, including research rotations.
Our PhD programmes offer opportunities for students with a wide range of academic backgrounds in biological or physical sciences, psychology, mathematics and bioinformatics. Students must have at least a 2.1 honours degree, or a masters degree in a relevant subject or demonstrate appropriate experience. Stipends in the first year will be £14,000.
Students are provided with first class supervision and training opportunities within the MRC Centre and the School of Medicine. Students are actively encouraged to present their research at local, national and international level throughout their PhD.
