You're right, damn you. I haven't read the book yet, as is clear.
But the connections seem to be pretty clear, only chronologically the
other way around... the Grendel-creature is a dragon-like thing. The
connections are that a Geat travels over the sea to rescue the Danes
from an otherwordly non-human night-ravener.
