Mathematical Modeller/Statistician
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur. We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or a virulent new strain of pathogen.
We are looking for a mathematical modeller / statistician to take the lead in developing and applying models for real-time forecasting of pandemic influenza and other infections and the impact of public health interventions. A key role of the post will be to support the development of real-time modelling expertise and capacity across the wider HPA. The post holder is expected to identify opportunities for future research in liaison with scientific and medical colleagues across the HPA, and supervise scientific staff within this area. The ideal candidate will have a background in infectious disease modelling and extensive experience in applying Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques. The post involves a range of complex and original scientific work and requires a high degree of personal motivation.
The post-holder will be based in the Modelling and Economics Unit at the Centre for Infections in Colindale, which is a dynamic and stimulating group comprising infectious disease modellers and health economists working on diverse projects relating to the burden of infectious disease and modelling the impact of interventions against infections.
The Centre for Infections at Colindale, NW London is an internationally renowned centre of excellence for expertise, reference and research, surveillance and epidemiology in relation to micro-organisms that affect human health. The modern purpose built centre is well equipped and staffed and provides excellent Library, Occupational Health and Refectory facilities. There is also a Nursery and Gym on Site.
The Health Protection Agency is an equal opportunities employer.
