Hi Zahra
I'm not sure of the name of the Roman midwife mentioned below, but the first
English woman to author a midwifery manual was Jane Sharp. Her book is
called The Midwives Book (1671), and is aimed at a common audience as well
as those practising midwifery. There is a modern critical edition ed. by
Elaine Hobby (New York: Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999). The text
does make numerous references to the biblical history of midwifery,
although I don't the quotations off hand, I'm afraid.
Best wishes
Claire
