The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (Research
Group III; Dr. Veronika Lipphardt) seeks an outstanding junior scholar
for a
three-year position (to begin September 2009)
as Research Fellow in conjunction with the research project “A
Cultural History of Knowledge about (and Research into) Human
Biodiversity in the 20th Century” (http://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/PDF/biodiversity.pdf
). The position is primarily devoted to research, with no teaching
duties. It is ranked at the TVöD E13 level in the German system, which
roughly corresponds to that of Lecturer in Britain, Assistant
Professor in North America, and Maître de conférences in France.
Candidates should hold a doctorate in the history of science or
related field at the time the position begins and show evidence of
scholarly promise in the form of publications or other achievements. A
previous postdoctoral position is desirable but not essential. They
should have basic knowledge of biology/genetics or be ready to acquire
it. Candidates with research interests and experience in challenging
disciplinary boundaries, such as Cultural History, History of Science,
or Colonial / Postcolonial History, are welcome.
The period of investigation covers 20th century up to present.
Research projects may concern various anthropological, biomedical or
biological fields of expertise; especially welcome are projects
concerning the history of anthropology, human genetics or population
genetics and/or a focus on a specific region. Additional relevant
disciplinary perspectives are very welcome.
Candidates should be able to read and communicate in English;
applications may however be submitted in German or English.
