I tend to agree with the detailed BBC guidelines, which consider web,
print, TV and radio:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/guidelines/newmedia/desed/urls.shtml
In short, the BBC recommends using a top-level directory only, i.e.
there should only be one slash after the hostname (bbc.co.uk/something
or kew.org.uk/something). Further to this, they require that a directory
name must be unambiguous when written or spoken and should be short,
memorable and easy to type.
