The ARCHER Project (http://archer.edu.au), a collaboration between Monash
University, James Cook University and the University of Queensland, wishes
to announce that software developed by the project is available for
download.
Using funding provided by Australian Commonwealth Department of Education,
Science and Training via the Research Information Infrastructure Framework
for Australian Higher Education, this Australian higher education
initiative has developed software tools to assist researchers to:
- collect, capture and retain large data sets from a range of different
sources including scientific instruments
- deposit data files and data sets to eResearch storage repositories
- populate these eResearch data repositories with associated metadata
- permit data set annotation and discussion in a collaborative
environment, and
- support next-generation methods for research publication, dissemination
and access.
For an overview of the ARCHER toolset see
http://www.archer.edu.au/products/
This has taken the form of a suite of independently tested, documented,
open-source, production-ready generic e-Research infrastructure components
to provide better management of research data:
- Distributed Integrated Multi-Sensor and Instrument Middleware (DIMSIM) -
concurrent data capture and analysis, and telemetry
- ARCHER Research Repository, which introduces enhancements to SRB
(Storage Resource Broker, http://www.sdsc.edu/srb/index.php/)
- XDMS – web-based research data manager and curator
- Hermes – desktop client research data manager and file transfer agent
- Collaborative Workspace Development Tool (based on Plone,
http://plone.org), for creating e-Research Portals.
They are available for download under a GPL3 licence from
http://www.archer.edu.au/downloads/
The ARCHER Project successfully completed in October 2008. Thanks to all
involved (http://www.archer.edu.au/contact/archer_dev.html) for their hard
work.
