I am not an expert on Specx, but I have had similar problems with PGPLOT
when it can't access the file 'grfont.dat' that should be located in whichever
directory your PGPLOT_DIR environment variable points at. Perhaps the file is
not there, or it is in the wrong binary format (endianness) or it does not
have read permission.
If I move my own grfont.dat file, I get no axis labels at all and the
following error message appears:
%PGPLOT, Unable to read font file: grfont.dat
%PGPLOT, Use environment variable PGPLOT_FONT to specify the location of the
PGPLOT grfont.dat file.
NB I think if there is no PGPLOT_FONT then it uses PGPLOT_DIR
