Glen, I have experience of standards and testing for police officers and
police staff drivers. If you would like to give me a call, we can discuss.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Vision screening for Drivers
Morning
can I ask my NHS colleagues if any of you routinely offer and/or do vision
screening for those staff who drive as part of their role?
I'm thinking of 2 specific groups, essential car drivers such as district
nurses
who usually use their own vehicle and then those who drive pool vehicles,
such as estates staff.
My initial view was they should ensure for their own safety and other road
users under DVLA terms that their vision is satisfactory, but as they have
to
drive at work should we be testing routinely? Should this be optional or
compulsory?
And if they have defective sight should we be covering the cost of a full
opticians test (as we do under DSE) or just restrict their practice until
such a
time they can prove they have corrective glasses/contact lenses?
This then asks the question how would we monitor glasses/lenses were being
worn? Whilst spot-checks could be done often these are lone workers and so
logistics would be impossible.
Has anyone else had these issues?
regards
Glenn
