I have contributed to CILIP Council's responses to the major issues of the
last year: in those areas where I have less career experience, such as the
public libraries issues, particularly the freedom of expression issues at
Hackney, I have joined in the Council debates (some email, some Council
meetings), and if I have a trend it has been to analyse the sometimes
complex issues involved and try to help identify the most important
ones/those we are likely to be able to make most impact on. On CPD I have
taken the line that compulsory CPD is essential if employers are to have the
same confidence in us as they do with eg nurses, lawyers, accountants, and
I'm very glad that the principle has now been adopted and we are moving to
designing the mechanisms. On the related issue of de-professionalisation, I
have welcomed the Conway report and as a member of Council helped establish
the direction of efforts since its publication, in terms of publicity and
representations to Government.
