Yes, there are limits to programmes being available via iPlayer.
It's 7 days after broadcast, though not all BBC programmes make it to
iPlayer at all, due to rights issues.
Some programmes are re-broadcast on other BBC channels, so the 7-day
period appears extended.
If you have a Mac (as I do), you cannot download programmes (yet). If
you have a PC you can download, but then once you begin to view the
programme the clock starts ticking, so you have a cut-off after which
you cannot access it anymore.
ITV have a similar system called 'catch-up'. Similar rules apply, but
with different time limits (and you can't fast-forward through the ads).
