 Dear all

An update from Malcolm Teague on the work of the NHS-HE Forum - I understand
that Salford University has now joined the early adopters group.

Subject: Research Capability Programme - consultation

Further update on item 6......

I attended a briefing event on the Research Capability Programme yesterday
in Birmingham which was very informative and excellent progress is being
made. It was mentioned that the researchers view was under-represented at
the moment in the consultation on the wider use of NHS data eg for clinical
research. Researchers currently represent only 2% of the responses. But I
have just completed it as an NHS user which was the category that best
fitted, so everyone can take part. It also takes you through the scenarios
gently step by step. Anyway it would be great if you could encourage as many
colleagues to take part as possible at
http://www.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/systemsandservices/research/consultati
on

There were a series of RCP briefing events so some of you may already have
attended elsewhere. The presentations are going to be made available so I
will endeavour to pass those on in some way later. The NHS-HE Forum got a
positive mention from Sir Alex Markham!

Many thanks,

Malcolm

Subject: Update

Dear All,

Regular NHS-HE Forum members might be wondering what has happened to the
usual November meeting. Well there has been a slight hiatus in the
arrangements for a new Chair of the Forum with Roland having retired from
UCL at the end of September. More news on that soon but unfortunately it is
not now realistic to have the next Forum meeting until early 2009. I'll be
in touch again as soon as a date is proposed.

In the meantime a quick update:

1. South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust first to achieve a JVCS
videoconference across the N3 JANET Gateway. They are one of four NHS Trusts
in the CETL4HealthNE project who are going to be connected and there is a
queue of other interested Trusts as well (but keen to hear from others as
well - please get in touch).

2. University of York is the sixth N3 JANET Gateway Early Adopter. This
is to ensure fast access from Primary Care Trusts to their interactive
database for the Improving Access To Psychological Therapies (IAPT)
programme. University of Salford look like being the next early adopter
addition. We are also working with a Primary Care Trust to try and take
forward NHS smartcard access to central NHS applications through the Gateway
and will let you know how that goes.

3. Work continues with NHS Connecting for Health on the Business Case
for a fully resilient N3 JANET Gateway service. This would take all traffic
between N3 (Scotland and England) and JANET. There should be more news on
this before the year end.

4. As part of the Public Sector Broadband Aggregration (PSBA) network,
NHS Wales is considering JANET for internet transit with the potential for
the same infrastructure to be the NHS JANET Gateway in Wales. These are
early discussions at the moment as their main focus is moving the NHS on to
the PSBA.

5. Project Board now set up to work on a road map for the National
Library for Health in England to make use of open standards for access
management in the future.

6. Connecting for Health's Research Capability Programme has published
its first set of output documents
http://www.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/systemsandservices/research/docs. It
is also went out to public consultation on additional use of Patient Data in
September with the deadline for comments being 10th December, see
http://www.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/systemsandservices/research/consultati
on to contribute.

7. The Department for Health has set out the timetable for applications
to be designated an Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC). As you may know
there was a briefing day recently and there is going to be an independent
panel review of who can be described as an AHSC in England. This has been
reported recently in the Health Service Journal, see
http://www.hsj.co.uk/news/2008/10/dh_sets_timetable_for_health_science_centr
es.html. A copy of the presentations is at
http://www.ournhs.nhs.uk/2008/10/20/ahsc-open-morning-kick-starts-designatio
n-process/

8. The National Institute of Health Research continues to be busy eg
wiith the announcement of Research Centres and Collaborations. Its portal is
also up and running, https://portal.nihr.ac.uk/Pages/default.aspx.

I would be pleased to be informed of developments I've missed.

Many thanks,

Malcolm
