I am attempting to find out all that I can about Anglo Saxon Querns. I have
ascertained that there were fragments of imported German lava stone found
from querns at Chalton, Portchester and Southampton in Hampshire, and that
the average diameter of these would have been around eighteen inches.
I cannot find any source of information on the shape of these. I gather that
the beehive querns were mostly Iron Age (following the saddle querns), and
there has been mention that the Romans brought in flat querns. I have not
been able to tie the bun-querns to any particular period.
Please can anyone advise me what shape a quern was likely to have been in
the early seventh century?
I am especially interested in this time - and in Hampshire.
Your help would be really appreciated
