Subject: proposed student union policy to ban military from university
premises
To: [log in to unmask]
Dear Umberto,
I hope you are well. For some reason I cannot access my shef email or
would have considered posting this to arch justice directly. It is
not entirely archaeology related but it may be of relevance anyway,
especially for those of us who have a direct Sheffield connection -->
http://www.shef.ac.uk/union/news.php?contentID=4558
Whereas I agree with the notion that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
are in many ways disastrous (like all wars are by definition), I feel
the response of the Union is reactionary, and goes against any sense
that Sheffield University is an establishment for higher education
where students can be considered capable (or so one would hope) to
make up their own minds. To ban any institution from distributing
information is a form of censure, and even if one disagrees
wholeheartedly with the aims and objectives of the army, isn't it
better to "know your enemy" etcetera? I would be interested to hear
other people's opinions on this, or at least bring it to people's
attention, especially in the light of their invitation for a
response/counter-proposal.
If you consider this an appropriate subject, could you forward it to
the list for discussion?
Many thanks,
letty
