Richard, this all sounds like it might be OK, but what about:
1. People who don't give a damn about academia, who may or may not be
employed at schools
2. People who actually still subscribe to journals and use the library to
find out the latest publications
3. People who network with friends (i.e., vis this list) to find out where
people are and what they're doing
4. People who are degreed but who are not currently affiliated with any
accredited institution of higher learning
I'd smile if I were to know that your yea-many years within the Ivory
Tower hasn't caused you to forget that there is a wider world, even an
underground, of highly qualified people who do not work, or who no longer
care to work, within the nostalgic and beautiful but chronically inbred
confines of quads such as All Souls. Let us know whether you intend to put
some extra categories in your website -- not to mention in your thinking
-- that would allow for these realities. Best wishes --

> Hi all,
>
> I'm a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, where I recently finished my
> Ph.D on the philosophy of perception.
>
> I've just launched a website, www.academia.edu, which does two things:
>
> - It displays academics around the world in a 'tree' format, according to
> the university/department they are affiliated with.
> - It enables researchers to keep track of the latest developments in
> their field - the latest people, papers, and talks.
>
> My hope is that the site will list every academic in the world -- Faculty
> members, Post-Docs, and Graduate Students.
>
> Academia.edu is getting some traction. Some of the professors on the site
> include:
>
> - Richard Dawkins - http://oxford.academia.edu/RichardDawkins
> - Stephen Hawking - http://cambridge.academia.edu/StephenHawking
> - Noam Chomsky - http://mit.academia.edu/NoamChomsky
>
> I'm trying to spread the word about www.academia.edu. If you have a
> minute, please visit the site, and add yourself to your department on the
> tree. If your department/university is not there, you can add it/them by
> clicking on the arrows coming out of the department/university boxes.
>
> And do spread the word to your friends and colleagues if you can.
>
> Many thanks,
