re "Kipling and the artists who illustrated his stories in magazines"
I read a paper in 1981 on "Illustrators of Kipling"; a copy is in the
Library. I researched illustrators of the books and magazines, such
as Pape, Raven-Hill, Dulac, Brock & Tresilian, without finding
anything about Kipling's choosing what to illustrate. Nor can I now
see anything under Illustrators in the general index in Vol 6 of Pinney.
In the book "RK to Rider Haggard" ed. by M Cohen, 1965, note RK's
remark in 1905 at p 65:re Windsor Magazine illustrations "What foul
illustrations to `Ayesha`. Pity one cant sprinkle lime over
illustrators - same as slugs". This does not suggest any
rapport. Magazines had to meet publication deadlines and I believe
that illustrations were probably often done in haste, commissioned by
the editor without much time to refer back to the author for approval.
Even for the books, I found no information re choice of subjects;
Macmillan's archive had no letters re this.
