Singleton is a town in the New England region of NSW, with a large army base
like Puckapunyal.
To add to the surreal nature of all this, at the end of school of I was
offered a scholarship to Duntroon Military College. They must have been
desperate. After years of boarding school, they thought I wanted to spend
MORE time with an entire community of sexually incoherent men? On the
grounds that my "troops" admired me? They 'admired' me because I bribed the
quartermaster to get alcohol into annual camp, and my platoon sergeant was a
borderline psychopath at 17, who had them all terrified...
It was as far removed from anything remotely real regarding war or as an
episode of MASH or Dad's Army, but with that ineffable soupçon of an
outbreak of violence and misogyny that underpins so much of male culture
here.
