I have recently been shown a file of Geological Survey documents recovered
from a tip, which proved to contain original reports, mine plans etc dating from
1946 probably part of the collection used in the compilation of Dines. Also
some WWII and 1920's mine reports. These refer to mines in West Penwith &
the Tavistock area. These were presumably discarded during the recent move
of BGS records from Exeter to Keywoth, Nottingham.
One must ask what what is the BGS's policy regarding the preservation of
such records, & if they are to be discarded surely it would be better to offer
them to the relevant county record office. This would also make it much
easier for anyone with an interest having a chance of viewing them.
