Applications are invited for an AHRC-funded Associate Research
Fellow/Research Fellow for the project:
'Connecting Cornwall: Telecommunications, Locality and Work in West
Britain, 1870-1918'
The project is run by the University of Exeter, Department of History (Cornwall
Campus), School of Humanities and Social Sciences
(Ref. R06N1779)
This full-time post is available from 2 February 2009 on a fixed-term basis
until 31 July 2010.
The post forms a key part of a major collaboration between the University
of Exeter's Cornwall Campus (near Falmouth) and the Porthcurno Telegraph
Museum (near Land's End). Funded by a large award from the Arts and
Humanities Research Council, 'Connecting Cornwall' will explore the social,
cultural, geographical and economic aspects of telecommunications in late
nineteenth and early twentieth century Cornwall. The project focuses
primarily on activities of the cable and wireless telegraphic stations at
Porthcurno and Poldhu, and the themes of local impact, technological
innovation, employment and health.
The postholder will be required to locate, interpret, and help digitally
image relevant material in the archives at the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum,
as well as elsewhere in Cornwall, and in London and Oxford. Working in a
team of academic historians, museum professionals and information
technologists, the postholder will help disseminate the research in the
form of scholarly publications, conference papers, an electronic database
and website, a museum exhibition, and educational resources.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in nineteenth and/or twentieth
century history with special reference to one or more of the following
areas: business, the physical sciences, technology, and medicine. They
should have a record of excellent research publications or evidence of
strong publishing potential, as well as expertise in producing and
processing digital images, and experience of website and museum design.
They will be spending most of their time in the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum
but will also be required to travel to the University of Exeter Cornwall
Campus, as well as make frequent research trips to other archives in
Cornwall, and to London and Oxford. They will be required to interact with
colleagues working on other sites via webcams and videoconferencing, and
will be required to work effectively as part of a team and to tight
deadlines.
