medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I don't recall seeing any scrolls associated with the synagogue in medieval
Christian art (other than the banner captions with labels or biblical
verses), but the Index of Christian Art gives a few items of interest, though
"scroll" may not be used with precision:
> ICA System #000108930: a portal at the Church of Notre Dame in
Berteaucourt-les-Dames from the mid-12th c. (public image not detailed
enough).
this is a rather obscure place way the hell up in Picardy (if i'm rememering
rightly), with a very unusual sculptural program spread over much of the west
facade (e.g., a crucifixion in the gable).
>On Archivolt 1: "Personification of Church, holding open book, is crowned by
half figure of Christ, who draws blindfold over eyes of Personification of
Synagogue, holding scroll."
i don't recall a "typical" sculpted portal --though there may well have been
one-- when last seen by me well over 30 years ago.
lots of 19th c. restoration, and maybe some additional damage from the First
Acute Collective Psychotic Episode, as well.
the iconography is discussed (and partially published) in an equally more
obscure and hard-to-come-by book
André Lapeyre, archiviste-paléographe.
Des façades occidentales de Saint-Denis et de Chartres aux portails de Laon;
études sur la sculpture monumentale dans l'Ille-de-France et les régions
voisines au XIIe siècle.
[Paris?: l'auteur] 1960.
Description: 324 p. illus. (part fold.) 33 cm.
Description: Thèse principale--Univ. de Paris.
there may also be a picture in whatever volume of the Congres Archeologique
treats the region (Amiens??).
