Audience: Participants must have strong working
knowledge of meta-analytic methods, and/or have
completed the Three Day Intermediate Meta-analysis Workshop (or equivalent).
Content: The rough schedule is presented below.
Morning:
Advanced meta-analysis: modelling and technical issues
Multilevel meta-analysis: the model and different software implementations
Multilevel meta-analysis: multivariate extensions
Using 3-level models to capture design features
Which estimation method, and how to test variances
Afternoon:
Advanced meta-analysis: methodological issues
Different approaches to meta-analysis:
contrasting the Hedges/Vevea approach and the Hunter/Schmidt approach
Fixed or random models? Principles versus practices
Addressing publication bias (file drawer problem,
fail-safe N, plots, statistical tests, sensitivity analysis)
Combining p-values revisited
Effective graphs

Hox’s biography: Joop is a psychologist and
Professor of Social Science methodology
specializing in social research methods at
Utrecht University. He is a member of the
Netherlands International Graduate School for
Psychometrics and Sociometrics (IOPS), which is a
collaborative network of many Methods &
Statistics Departments, mostly in Europe. He is a
member of several scientific organisations,
including the Royal Statistical Society. In 1990,
Joop spent four months at the Department of
Psychology at UCLA as a Fulbright scholar.
Joop’s main research interests are survey
methodology and data quality, the analysis of
complex data with multilevel and structural
models, and nonresponse problems in surveys and
interviewer effects. He has written an
introductory book about multilevel analysis and
most recently published Multilevel Analysis,
Techniques and Applications. In addition, he has
written both statistical and applied papers about
meta-analysis. More information, including
