I take the view that most design is not user centred design (UCD). It
is centred around the needs and interests of the organisations that
pay for design. Their interest is predominantly concerned with profit,
control or ritual display.
'Users' have only entered the equation because they are a route to
meeting these predominant needs and interests. Those of us who got
into design because of our concern for people, opportunistically climb
on the back of these organisational interests.
I also take the view that, despite our efforts and many achievements,
if those with money and power could achieve their ends without
depending on consumer spending and the political power of people, then
they would do so. And so called 'UCD' would fade.
Design processes will still continue to develop. There will just be
one less stakeholder to take account of.
BTW, I too have reservations about the term UCD: see: http://www.communication.org.au/dsblog/?p=41
