The Graduate Forum is pleased to announce that its first meeting for this year will take place this Tuesday, 7th of October, from 5.30 to 7.00 (Room STB8, Stewart House, Russell Square).
For this first session - which will not be following our regular seminar format but is exceptionally going to run as a reading group - we will be discussing the notion of 'manipulation'.
The act of manipulating refers to the idea of controlling or handling something with skill but also, in its often derogative sense, to a person's effort to "control or influence somebody/something by clever or unfair means" (OED). The purpose of this reading group is to explore the subtle differences between these two different uses of the noun manipulation.
Reading material will be distributed on the day. If you would like to contribute by suggesting a passage or an article, please email us either a scanned copy of the text you have in mind or the complete reference at: [log in to unmask] Provided there is sufficient interest, we will be heading to the nearby pub afterwards.
We look forward to seeing you there
Best wishes
The Graduate Forum team
