medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Didn't I hear something on National Public Radio just yesterday about pigeon's having superstitious rituals?
;-))
My point being is that, like Chris said, sentient beings seem to enjoy ritualizing things, the more ordinary the original, the more ritualized it seems to become.
This tintinabulae thing makes me think of something which may - or may not - be medieval in origin. At a local Catholic parish the director of religious ed.
found an old candle stand in the church sacristy. In the middle of the stand is a small (3 inch) bell. No one knows the purpose of the thing so for Mass with
the kids during the week they let one of the elementary kids carry it up to the altar.
What was the original purpose/meaning/function/origin of that candle/bell thing? Does anyone know?
