Especially in today's economic climate, if you are to make a success of new
journal launches, it's even more important that you get your strategy right.
Which is why, if you haven't already booked a place on the ALPSP seminar on
which is being held in London on November 14 - you should do so now.
Making a Success of Launching New Journals
Date: 14 November, 2008
Venue: British Institute of Radiology, 36 Portland Place, London W1B 1AT
Chair: Jayne Marks, SAGE
Launching journals was once an every day part of providing an academic
publishing service. Whenever a new field of research emerged, a new journal
would be published. But this has changed dramatically over the last ten
years. Fewer and fewer publishers are launching new titles and those that do
are finding it harder to make them successful.
This seminar will explore the process of launching new journals and some of
the traits of successful launches, including how some publishers have
responded to the changing pressures and opportunities in today's academic
market. Speakers will explain some of the different business models now
available for new launches and how to determine what is right for your
proposal. We will also ask the question whether the academic community needs
any more journals and if launching is not the right option, what is.
Speakers will come from publishers and societies that have launched journals
and from the subscribing market to share how they view new journals.
The seminar is aimed at anyone thinking about launching a journal or
wondering how to provide a publication outlet for an emerging field.
The Chair is Jayne Marks of Sage, and the speakers are an impressive
assembly of not just experienced publishers but also academics and
librarians
Sarah Thomas of RSC,
Robin Bloxsidge of Liverpool University Press
Stacey Gubb of Taylor and Francis
Peter Collins of Nature Publishing Group
Tessa Pickett of Sage
Mark Patterson of PLoS
Jeremy Theobald of Emerging Health Threats Forum
David Inglis of the University of Aberdeen
Graham Stone from the University of Huddersfield.
