Hi,
I was wondering whether other people had noticed that there were problems using EndNote Web with Word since the upgrade that took place with the Web of Knowledge Service last Sunday 19th October 2008.
The problem relates to the fact that when one cites the same reference twice within a word document the 2nd time the reference is cited it is treated as a new reference and appears again in the list of references with an a, b etc. appended to the year. The in text citation also has an a, b etc. appended to the year. This is not what is meant to happen - if one cites a reference several times it should only appear once in the reference list. The other issue is that often when multiple authors are cited for the first time in the text all the authors should be shown and the next time the same paper is cited it should abbreviate the in text citation to the 1st author et al. So this is another problem. (Of course I realise that it depends which style one is using as to exactly what happens with multiple authors, but this is what happens with the recommended style I have to use).
The best way to illustrate this problem is with the following short example:
Text:
.....However hosting the Olympics has not always brought the desired benefits. (Hibbert, 2005a; Illia, 2003a). The 1972 Munich Olympics and the 1976 Montreal Olympics made considerable losses (Illia, 2003b). If the 2012 Olympics are not suffer the same losses then it is important to learn from the problems of these earlier Olympic Games (Hibbert, 2005b). .....................
Reference List:
I have reported this problem to the MIMAS helpdesk and reported it via the feedback page on the EndNote Web site. I understand that at least one other institution has reported this problem and that the publisher is working to resolve this problem.
However I have a number of concerns:
1. The lack of any communication from Thomson Reuters re: this problem now that it has been recognised (they do after all deluge you all the positive information, but why not alert us to known problems following the upgrade).
2. The lack of any warning on the EndNote Web site that this is a problem that they are working on - this would be helpful for our users and for others who aren't yet aware of this problem.
3. The possibility that there are other bugs that we aren't aware of yet, but where we may have to provide advice to our users.
4. The timing of this major upgrade is particularly bad coming in the 4th week of our new academic year.
5. Having spent the last four weeks running sessions (with more to come) with students on using EndNote web (and other associated topics) and getting positive feedback on this resource I now feel that all that work and effort is now going to be undermined and cause confusion amongst the students I've been seeing.
6. The EndNote web site has also been extremely slow especially when trying to get students registered.
Cheers
Lesley
