italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
The Trinity College Dublin Translation Studies Group
is holding a conference entitled
TRANSLATION RIGHT OR WRONG,
on Friday 6th - Saturday 7th March, 2009.
We have two keynote speakers:
Josephine Balmer: "Whose Classics?: Transgressing
and Recreating Ancient Greek & Latin Texts."
Lawrence Venuti: "Translation, Intertextuality, Interpretation."
This Call for Papers is to invite colleagues to
propose papers, or even groups of papers, that
might fit into the title. Suggested themes for
the sessions of the conference are listed below,
but others are possible and creative responses
are welcome.
Teaching Translation
Language learning; teaching literary translation
Translation and Taboo
Translation for children
True and False
(truth to type, to genre, to idiom)
Judging Translation
Omissions; Praising Translation
Multiple Translations/Revisiting Translations
Glosses, Paraphrases and Footnotes
Corrections
Translation and Language Politics
Translation into lesser used languages
Sacred Texts
Bible, Koran, canonical texts
Papers relevant to the suggested themes, or at
least to the conference title, should be 25
minutes long. Abstracts should be sent to
[log in to unmask] by 31st October 2008.
The conference fee will be ¤40, including tea, coffee and a wine reception.
The proceedings of the 2005 conference on
Translation and Censorship will probably have
been launched by the end of 2008; copies will be
available at the conference.
Further details (including conference dinner, website) will follow later.
I apologize for the short notice, and hope that
the conference theme will strike a chord with
colleagues. Enquiries, proposals and ideas of all
kinds are very welcome.

Associate Professor
Head of the Department of Italian
