Rachel
To use the Files Area of HER Forum go to
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/archives/herforum.html .
You should find that you have "HER Forum archives" on the left side of
the screen and towards the top right hand side there is a list of
options in green in a box - click on "Files Area" and then you will see
a series of documents and folders. Single click on the "HER Manuals"
folder and you will find a sub-folder headed "Hampshire" - there are two
documents within this.
One of the reasons for planning to move the documents currently in the
Files Area on HER Forum is that we hope to make them more accessible via
the Heritage Gateway!

Possibly a daft question, but as I've never tried to use it can you tell
me how to access the HER Forum Files Area?
Many thanks

Dear List member
I would be happy to place any HER recording/procedural manuals that
folks are happy to share in the HER Forum Files Area.
You can already have a look at some of the manuals kindly provided from
Hampshire there.
Please email off list if you would like to submit any documentation for
sharing in this way.
Also please note that we are planning to migrate the information from
the Files Area of HER Forum to the Professional Access area of the
Heritage Gateway in the next few months.

Perhaps those who are willing to share their hard work could have them
added to the HER_Manuals directory in the HER Forum File area??

HI
WE have spoken about manuals but not got that far yet. Instead of us
all doing a broadly similar task, is there any mileage in those of you
who are advanced with it making it more widely available and then we can
just adapt them to our own situations? Look forward to hearing your
thoughts Cheers Val

Hi Alice
SNAP! I am writing manuals too, great isnt it?
I have done our relationship one, and we have basically decided not to
record any. I have to be honest and say I remain unconvinced as to the
use of recording relationships, as most of them appear to duplicate
other data, but that may just be how we work/how I have understood
things.
Historically our records were linked hierarchically (ie parent child)
but we are going to remove these as part of general cleaning of data (as
it was just a geographical thing which is now available from the GIS)
Chronological linking - can't you just get this by querying on period?
Am I missing something here?
Like I say we are not planning to record any, but would be interested to
see what you come up with to see if you have thought of things I
haven't.
best wishes

I'm in the middle of writing our HER recording manual, and am wondering
how other HERs use monument relationships to structure their data. Here
in Norfolk we're really only using parent-child and peer-peer
(chronological) relationships at the moment, but I was wondering whether
there are any other useful relationship types that other HERs are using
that we might want to adopt.
Any info/suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks,
Alice
