Hi All,
In my role as Vice Chair for CIWEM Scottish Branch, I have the pleasure of
organising the Scottish Branch of CIWEM's annual dinner and symposium and
this years topic is 'Environmental Risk' and we start the symposium with
our keynote speaker Dr Swenja Surminski, the Climate Change Policy Advisor
for the British Association of Insurers. Then we will move on to a series
of presentations with the first presentation from Colin Ramsay from Health
Protection Scotland (HPS) is presenting on the risk communication guidance
published in September by the HPS and outlines best practise for
communicating public health risks to members of the public. Rob Bell,
Editor of Contaminated Land Briefing will discussing the role of the press
and risk communication, as we all know the important role they have to play
but can they be used effectively to communicate risk ?
These presentations will be followed by a series of case studies from the
water and environmental industry in the afternoon, to outline the different
approaches to deal with specific issues and risk factors within the water
and environmental industry. The session opens with Peter Dowswell of
Scottish Water discussing drinking water safety planning, followed by SEPA
discussing the implementation of their new programme for flood warning
communication. Then in the second half of the afternoon, we shift focus
from the water environment to the physical environment with the experiences
of National Grid in communicating risk to their stakeholders in terms of
dealing with potentially contaminated land holdings associated with former
and active gas works sites. In terms of the contaminated land community
this should be an ideal opportunity to look at how different sectors
discuss and communicate the issues associated with risk including SEPA's
flood warning system which is now focussed on changing behaviour in order
to manage risk associated with flooding.
This all takes place at the George Hotel in Edinburgh on Tuesday 18th of
November for a very reasonable price of £150 per delegate with a reduced
rate available, if you have any graduates or students who may be interested
in attending. You don't have to be a member of CIWEM to come along and
enjoy our symposium just fill in the attached flier and return it to me.
Look forward to seeing you there.
