Advanced Gene Mapping Course
The Rockefeller University, New York City
Monday through Friday, December 8-12, 2008
Emphasis in this course is on the analysis of complex disease traits. It will include theory as well as practical exercises. The exercises will be carried out using a variety of computer programs. TOPICS include: sib pair and extended family analysis (quantitative and qualitative traits);
association studies - population and family based - with an emphasis on genome wide association studies; controlling for population admixture/substructure; tagSNP selection; data quality control; imputation of genotype data; gene x gene interaction; evaluating power, sample size estimation,
permutation and significance levels for genetic studies; controlling for multiple testing, and the false discovery rate.
The instructors for the course are: Goncalo Abecasis (University of Michigan), Laura Almasy (Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research), Heather Cordell (University of Newcastle), Suzanne Leal (Baylor College of Medicine & The Rockefeller University) and Shaun Purcell (Harvard University). A
special lecture will be given by Dr. Jurg Ott on detecting gene-environment interactions on Wednesday December 10 at 5:00PM.
The cost of the 5-day course is $100. This fee covers tuition and course related expenses (handouts, etc.) but not room and board. Six travel stipends of up to $1,100 each are available to eligible participants from U.S. institutions. Preference for the stipend will be given to students and
