Dear All
I have recently had an enquiry from our Admissions Manager about an
additional criteria being considered for inclusion in the admissions policy , the
request has been made from outside the Admissions team and is basically
asking for an additional criteria to added to the academic criteria a follows
"we would also consider any adjustments that might be required for those with
particular needs"
The implication being that we would investigate disability alongside academic
potential when deciding whether to offer someone a place at the University. I
must stress that this has not yet been approved and advice from our legal
team is currently being sought. I have concerns that this contradicts our
commitment make decisions on applications from disabled people
On academic merit and potential, in the same way as for other applicants - so
there would be a conflict here if we added this criteria. I have been looking at
other University Admissions policies some do state that "in Exceptional
Circumstances where adjustments can't be met a place may not be offered,
but every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate the needs of
disabled students.
I'd welcome any comments and feedback you may have about the legal
implications and moral implications of using this type of criteria - is it
commonly used in other Admissions Policies?
