Dear list,
Another query re-limekilns:
We have got to the bottom of our limekiln, and have found two cast iron
billets, about 10in square by 18in long, one with two 1in diameter holes
through either end; the other with shallow slots in one face, continuing
round to each end. These lay on the kiln floor, covered with solidified
lime from the last burn. They lay partly under the 'horse', or iron bar
which is fixed across the foot of the pot, but were not attached to any part
of the structure.
I have observed others at three local kiln sites in the Tamar Valley, all of
which are however recycled as building materials in various parts of their
structures. They are obviously something to do with limeburning, but I
cannot find any reference in the literature to them. In particular, Ken
Isham's book on Cornish limekilns does not mention them.
Does anyone have any ideas?
