FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
Association of American Geographers Annual Conference, Las Vegas, 22-27
March 2009
Young people, racism and place
Organisers: Peter Hopkins and Anoop Nayak (School of Geography, Politics and
Sociology, Newcastle University, UK)
Although concerns about the experiences, manifestations and consequences
of racism were once common-place within social and cultural geography, there
is a sense that issues connected with race, racism and ethnicity have become
marginalised within the discipline as the focus has diversified somewhat to
explore new forms of social and spatial relations. The aim of this session is to
return to focusing upon issues of racism through exploring the intersection of
racism and place in young people's lives. We are interested in discussing the
ways in which race is materialised in young people's everyday lives and how
this influences, shapes or is shaped by their experiences of place and other
social identities.
Potential topics that papers could focus upon include (but are not limited to):
- young people racism and anti-racism
- racism, territory and space
- globalisation and new ethnicities
- racism and ethnicity after 9/11, 7/7 or other geopolitical events
- the racialisation of religion or other social identities
- racism and nationalism in young people's lives
- young people, identities and whiteness
- young people, 'gangs' and racist violence
- cultural representations of racism and youth
- young people's atttitudes towards, and responses to, racism
- methodological issues in researching youth, racism and place
